AT-The National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) on Monday said that Afghanistan as a less developed country, is more vulnerable to climate change—a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time.

Shah Zaman Maiwandi, NEPA Director said that climate change ‘is one of the greatest threats for us and our next generations’.

Lunching programs at national level to tackle climate changes is our top priority, Zamnnews reported.

“To tackle climate challenges, we need joint action and close collaboration with all our partners, civil society organizations, religious scholars and the people.”

Talking in an event in the frame of the EU Climate Diplomacy Week, he assured commitment of the government to continue efforts to tackle the challenges of climate change in Afghanistan.

At the same event European Union Ambassador, Pierre Mayaudon said that Afghanistan is one of the countries that climate changes can dramatically affect on.

“300 thousand people are displaced due to the climate change. Afghanistan has signed the Paris Agreement, and NEPA has launched programs to mobilize the people.”

The ambassador said that National Unity Government leadership has clear understanding of climate change and tackling this challenge is very important to them.

“EU has launched a €36 million project in close cooperation with NEPA, to prevent displacement of people.’
