Kabul: Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan said that “Afghanistan remains the world’s largest humanitarian crisis in 2023, with the exception of Turkey and Syria, which suffered from a deadly earthquake.
Speaking to reporters in New York on developments in Afghanistan he said that 28 million people in the country now depend on sever need to humanitarian aid.
According to Al-Akbarov, over the past 18 months, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declined by up to 35 per cent, the cost of a basic food basket rose by 30 per cent and unemployment by 40 per cent.
The UNAMA deputy has emphasized that currently 75% of the income of Afghan families is spent just on food.
Alakbarov also said “I regret to say that to date we haven’t seen any news or any encouraging developments with regard to girls’ education.”
Meanwhile, the UN continues to engage with the de facto authorities in Kabul for delivery of humanitarian aids to the people.
