AT Kabul: In an unexpected turn of events, Afghanistan has emerged as the unlikely top holiday destination for 2024, defying safety advisories from the UK Foreign Office. Lupine Travel founder, Dylan Harris, reveals that the country is experiencing a surge in popularity due to increased safety under new leadership.
Harris expressed his astonishment, stating, “It’s completely blown me away. It’s the last place I expected to sell so well.” Lupine Travel had suspended operations to Afghanistan after the Taliban’s takeover in 2021 but resumed trips after deeming the region safer than before.
Despite the UK Foreign Office labeling Afghanistan as “extremely dangerous,” Lupine Travel’s tours for 2024 have sold out, with increased demand prompting additional tours for 2025. Harris acknowledges heightened bureaucratic processes but remains optimistic about the growing interest.
The 10-day tours, priced at £2,250, cover Kabul, Herat, Bamiyan, Band-e-Amir National Park, the Hindu Kush, Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh, and a traditional buzkashi game. Flight costs are additional, involving travel via Abu Dhabi, Dubai, or Istanbul.
While the FCDO strongly advises against travel to Afghanistan, citing terrorism threats and extreme danger, Harris emphasizes indirect engagement with the Taliban and the positive impact on local communities. He stated, “We’re meeting people who are really happy to see foreign faces coming back over and supporting hotels, supporting the local economy.”
