KABUL: The Afghan Taliban’s interim administration announced on Saturday the successful test of a new guided rocket system, marking a significant development in its military capabilities.
Enayatullah Khowarazmi, spokesperson for the Taliban’s Interim Defense Ministry, shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the Milan Konkursi (9M135) guided missile system was tested at the artillery headquarters in Kabul.
The system is reportedly designed to strike armored tanks, warships, and low-flying helicopters. Khowarazmi added that 13 soldiers have been trained to operate the newly activated system, which he claims is being used for the first time in Afghanistan.
“This guided rocket was activated for the first time in the country,” Khowarazmi said, without disclosing details on the system’s origin or how it was developed under Taliban administration.
Military Revamp Under Taliban Rule
Since regaining power in August 2021 following the withdrawal of US-led forces, the Taliban has worked to restore and expand its military arsenal. Khowarazmi recently stated that the interim administration repaired 70 military planes and helicopters allegedly damaged by US forces before their departure from Afghanistan.
The US had provided approximately $7 billion worth of military equipment to Afghanistan over 16 years, much of which the Taliban seized after taking control of Kabul. While some of the equipment was intentionally damaged by US forces before their exit on August 31, 2021, the Taliban claims to have restored parts of the stockpile.
The recent test of the Milan Konkursi system demonstrates the Taliban’s focus on modernizing its military capabilities, raising concerns about regional stability and the implications for Afghanistan’s future.
