KABUL: Afghanistan’s Education Ministrywith the cooperation of UNICEFwill publish more than 30,000 menstrual health guidelines in the first quarter of 2019 to be taught to girl students from fifth to twelfth grade of school, officials said Monday.
Spokesperson of Ministry of Education Nooria Nazhat, said that girl students will learn about hygiene practices and the use of appropriate cloth pads during their period using these guidelines, through written, spoken and storytelling books which will be developed.
She said that using these guidelines, students will understand that menstruation is a natural phenomenon and shows the gradual evolution of girls. These guidelines also reduce the mental stress of female students during menstruation days.
The spokesperson for the MoE further says that the active participation of teachers in raising awareness of students about hygiene of menstruation will make the girl students healthy and active.
For teaching these guidelines, around 68 master trainers are trained to educate the school teachers, so they can deliver the hygiene and menstruation health issues to students, she added.
According to UNICEF survey in 2016, about 30% of girls were absent during their period time, and other 70% do not take bath during their menstrual period due to fear of barrenness.
Afghanistan Ministry of Education is committed to improving teachers’ capacity to support quality education by implementing effective educational programs and improving educational curriculum.
