KABUL: Afghanistan announced it welcomes investigation of assassination of Saudi critic journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday in a statement that Afghanistan is adherent to defend human rights, freedom of speech, freedom of media and safety of journalists. It said that welcoming of probing of Khashoggi’s case was part of Kabul’s commitments in defending of human rights and freedom of speech.
The statement praised Saudi Arabia for working hard to investigate the case.
Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post was known for criticizing Saudi government. He was killed inside the Saudi consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul in 2018, according to reports and Turkish officials.
The United States issued a report about the assassination last week that accuses Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman of approving the murder. The US report was prepared in 2018, but then president Donald Trump did not allow its issuance. The report says that bin Salman had approved a plan based on which Saudi intelligence operatives were assigned to either arrest or kill Khashoggi.
