AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: In order to curb rapes, the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) urged the government put end to the culture of impunity over sexual violence.
An official of the AIHRC, Latifa Sultani, while talking to Radio Azadi blamed the culture of impunity for rise of sexual violence against women and children. “Rapists act with impunity as they know they can easily get away with their crime by paying bribe,” she added.
She said that women and children are being raped in different parts of the country, but the law enforcement authorities usually fail to bring the rapists to the book. Sultani added that rape cases, previously, were talking place in volatile provinces, but currently they even take place in relatively peaceful provinces.
A number of women rights activists termed the culture of impunity as an obstacle before curbing rapes in Afghanistan. Mahbouba Seraj, a rights activist, said: “Unless laws are strengthened to punish rapists and justice is delivered this crime will continue unchecked.”
However, an official in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said that they have arrested rapists and handed them over to judicial organizations.
