AIHRC calls on U.N to prevent targeted attacks on women

AT News

KABUL: The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission called on the United Nations to offer efforts for preventing targeted attacks on women in Afghanistan.

Zabihullah Farhang, an official at the Commission, expressed concerns on the targeted killings of high profile women saying that “14 women have been killed in targeted attacks since the start of 2021.” According to him, 22 other women who were working for the government, media outlets and human rights, were wounded in the mentioned period.

“We ask our international partners, especially the United Nation to use its influence on the Taliban and government for ending violence and ceasefire agreement,” Farhang said.

Afghanistan has recently seen a surge in targeted attacks against female media workers and activists as well as government employees. On Thursday, a female police officer was gunned down by unidentified armed men in Jalalabad, the capital city for eastern Nangarhar province.

Provincial Police Spokesman, Farid Khan said that the officer was attacked while on her way to office. She succumbed to injuries at the hospital, he said, adding that two people were arrested on charge of killing.

No militant group, including the Taliban asserted the responsibility for the attack.

On Tuesday, unknown gunmen shot three female vaccinators dead in two separate attacks also in Jalalabad.

The Amnesty International called for an immediate investigation into the incident. “This despicable and cowardly act has taken the lives of three women who were dedicating themselves to protecting the health of Afghan children,” the Amnesty International said in a statement.

Last month, in a similar incident, three female anchors of the Enikas TV channel were killed in Jalalabad. The ISIS-K or so called Daesh asserted the responsibility for the attacks.

The Taliban group denies involvement in the attacks.
