AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) expressed its deep concerns over increase in violence against women in northern Balkh, Jowzjan, Sar-e-Pul and Samangan provinces.
Fawzia Nawabi, an official of the AIHRC’s office in Afghanistan’s north, voiced her concerns over increase in cases of violence against women. “In most cases, women commit suicide or become victim of honor killings,” Radio Azadi quoted Nawabi as saying.
She said that other cases of violence against women include beating, forced marriages, lack of access to education.
She termed lack of access to judicial organizations, poverty and widespread illiteracy as the main reasons for increasing violence against women.
Some women right activists also expressed concerns over rise in violence against women.
Malalai Osmani, a women right activist, said that violence against women in Sar-e-Pul, Balkh and Samangan provinces have raised by 20 percent.
She said that around 120 cases of violence against women have been registered in the provinces over the past three months.
