KABUL: Air pollution in Kabul city has risen to drastically high levels and National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) is warning that pollution has tripled over the past week.
NEPA blames the catastrophic pollution on airborne particles and climate change.
NEPA says its efforts to lower air pollution in Kabul are handicapped due to a lack of adequate equipment.
“All the equipment we have installed at the National Environmental Protection Agency‘s facilities, the statistics we have collected over the last two or three days, and our graphs, especially about dust and airborne particles with a diameter of 2.5 cubic meters relatively, all show that pollution is increasing beyond the standard air quality of the World Health Organization,” said NEPA inspection control officer Basir Amin.
The ever-galloping levels of pollution in Kabul are ratcheting up fears among citizens about spread of health issues and diseases, especially among children. Breathing illnesses have already increased in Kabul. Citizens say polluting businesses and factoring are using low-quality materials. And there is a rising demand among citizens for creation of green areas in cities as well as the creation of green belts around cities that are mainly made up of trees and perennial plants.
Kabul is already one of the most polluted cities in the world.
