Amid the rubble, the city returns to pre-war normalcy

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: After almost a week of siege and violent onslaught, Afghan security forces have retaken full control of southern Ghazni as the militant Taliban have been pushed out of the main city and a handful of nearby villages, and a semblance of normalcy has returned there, said the defense ministry on Wednesday.

The armed forces have carried out ground and air offensives and cleared the main city and villages of Haydar Abad, Hasan Abad, Mugholan, and Nawabad of militants and people have resumed normal life, said a ministry of defense statement. The offensives have left 30 Taliban guerillas dead, and two more militants have been captured from the city of Ghazni as well as Salar area of Maidan Wardak province. “Onslaught against the Taliban will continue to pound enemy holdouts in Ghazniin a bid to clear all infested areas,” it added, “Five police stations have been reactivated, and telecommunication networks restored”.

“Enemy has not spared any atrocity during their attack and has put fire to many public facilities. Considering the concerns of people, Afghan army forces assure people of Ghazni that enemy will not get any chance of disturbing people’s normal life,” said the ministry

Ghazni Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Moballegh has also confirmed that situation has calmed in Ghazni city and that people resumed normal life as shops have reopened.

The armed forces are also carrying out a house-to-house search to arrest or target militants possibly hiding. Work is going on to reconnect water supply for people, after medical checkup to ensure of not contaminated with poison.

Technicians have started repairing communication towers too. Food and other relief items have arrived at the province, which will be distributed among needy people after surveys. Moreover, Kabul-Ghazni highway has also reopened for traffic and fight against insurgents continued in the outskirts of the city, he said.
