AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) is expecting to receive 10,000 AK-47 assault rifles from Russia today (Wednesday) in a ceremony to be held in the military section of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. The Afghan National Security Advisor, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, and officials from the Embassy of the Russian Federation would attend the handover ceremony.
The delivery of 10,000 AK-47 assault rifles to the ANSF is coming as part of Moscow’s efforts to equip and improve the capabilities of the Afghan security forces. These assault rifles would help a lot the ANSF in battlefield against insurgents.
“Russia has been consistently pursuing the policy of providing comprehensive assistance to Afghanistan in the establishment of a peaceful, independent, stable and self-sufficient state, free from terrorism and drugs,” Russian President’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, said late in December last year while informing regarding the dispatch of the rifles to the Afghan forces.
It seems that Afghan government is leaving no stone unturned to attract the regional as well as global support aimed at equipping Afghan security forces.
Afghan Air Force recently received four A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircrafts form the US as part of the A-29 program aimed at training Afghan pilots in employing weapon system and combating insurgents. Afghanistan also received 12 MD 530 helicopters equipped with enhanced mission equipment. Before that, three MI-25 gunship helicopters, donated by India, joined the Afghan Air Force. The attack helicopters are designed to take on fortified enemy positions and counter heavy ground fire.
