AT-KABUL: Afghan National Army (ANA) rescued 59 people, mostly security personnel, in a raid on the Taliban-run prison in southern Helmand province, the ministry of defense said on Saturday.
“They were released after an operation launched by the Special Forces last night in the Shoraki area of Nahr-e-Seraj district,” the ministry said in a statement issued here.
“The army conducted the operation in the area based on information shared by the locals about the existence of a Taliban-run prison where the hostages were kept,” said the defense ministry.
An official of the ministry of defense Mohammad Ishaq Paiman said that 37 of the captives were soldiers, seven were policemen and 15 were civilians.
“The freed hostages were safe and sound and the Special Forces had suffered no casualty,” Paiman said, adding that the Taliban fighters suffered casualties during the four-hour operation.
According to the statement, the Taliban failed to resist and the troops succeeded to release the hostages.
