KABUL: Heavy snow and avalanches have killed 25 Taliban rebels in southeastern Paktia province, officials said on Monday, adding they were killed after trying sneakily to go to Pakistan.
Provincial Police’s Spokesman Mohammad Lal Amiri said the incident occurred on Sunday night in Tangizaghni area of Zazi Aryoub district.
According to him, the militants came under the snowfall while they were on the way to Pakistan, where the militants hold safe havens and military camps. The dead included the Pakistani nationals as well, he added.
The Taliban have not stated any remarks in regards so far.
Paktia is among insecure provinces in the southeastern provinces of Afghanistan, where the Taliban are strongly active.
Afghanistan has recently been hit with cold and snowy waves. The Afghanistan Meteorological Department earlier announced that 30 of 34 provinces would experience heavy rainfall and snow that could also lead to fatal floods.
