AT-KABUL: According to police officials in northern Balkh province, fierce heavy clashes have erupted between the Taliban and government forces in Chamtal district – where unrest has escalated over the past months.
This happens while four villages of Chamtal district have, according to a senior provincial official, fallen to the Taliban following heavy clashes on Thursday evening.
Taliban are marching close to Chamtal’s center, according to head of Balkh Provincial CouncilAfzalHadid, who warned on Friday that Chamtal is undergoing a major security threat as the Taliban plan to overrun the district.
Balkh police spokesman Shir Jan Durrani meanwhile said heavy clashes are ongoing between government forces and the Taliban in Chamtal district. He did not confirm fall of the villages to the Taliban. Durrani said two local police force members have been wounded in the conflict.
Chamtal residents said some families have left their homes due to security threats. Chamtal is located in the west of Balkh. It is among vulnerable districts of the province in terms of insecurity which often faces clashes between government forces and militants.
In a social media post, Taliban has claimed that the group has captured areas in Chamtal district.
