Bamiyan residents protest highway insecurity

AT-KABUL: In the aftermath of increasing insecurity in highway connecting the capital city Kabul with the central Bamiyan province, a number of residents in Bamiyan on Sunday attended a peaceful rally, seeking tight security measures for the highway and criticizing the government’s reluctance in this regard.

Last week, at least eight people were shot dead in a district related to the southern Ghazni province which lays on the highway that connects the two provinces.

Members of the rally urged the government to uproot insecurity in the highway, or else the situation would worsen and more people would lose their lives while traveling to the central and southern provinces.

A civil society activist and a participant of the rally, Abdul Halim Kamal, said that several passengers have been killed recently by insurgents while they were on the way to Bamiyan in Ghorband area and Jalrez district of the province.

He suggested the government, particularly security agencies to establish security check posts on the highway as there is no check post in some parts of the highway thus insecurity has raised there.

Head of Bamiyan civil society, Hussain Dad Ahmadi, said that the rally was aimed at condemning the activities of armed men that are trying to kill people in the highway, on roads, bazaars.

Another rights activist, Mohammad Hussain Alizada, said the government is responsible to ensure citizens’ safety wherever they live therefore it should implement proper security plans to stem insecurity in the highway as well as parts of the province which are suffering from militancy.

The United Nations in a recent report said that the Taliban militants, Haqqani Network and other rebel groups are responsible for almost 75 percent of civilian casualties in Afghanistan.

The Afghan security forces shouldered full control of security in first day of 2015 which received huge support by the nation. Security officials during vowed to defend the country until the end drop of their blood. Recently, around 5,000 religious scholars during a ceremony in Kabul pledged their support to the Afghan security forces and termed them as the heroes.
