KABUL: The leaders of China and Pakistan in a meeting, called for the release of the Afghan assets as Afghanistan is scrambling with a fractured economy following the rapid fall of the western-backed government of former president Ashraf Ghani.
The meeting happened in a visit of the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to Beijing where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping Sunday held wide-ranging bilateral talks.
Many World leaders are visiting Beijing to witness Friday’s opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games.
China and Pakistan “called upon the international community to provide continued and enhanced assistance and support to Afghanistan including through unfreezing of Afghanistan’s financial assets,” a post-meeting joint statement.
After the Islamic Emirate’s takeover of Kabul, the US department of treasury froze over 9 billion dollars of Afghanistan’s central bank assets.
Earlier, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the US to release the frozen assets of Afghanistan, as over 90 percent of the country’s population is under the poverty line.
Although the Islamic Emirate established its government cabinet nearly six months ago, no world country has recognized the current Afghan government as of now.
To consider the recognition of the Afghan government, the international community put the formation of an inclusive government, ensuring women’s rights and the human rights of the citizens as the preconditions.
