KABUL – Beijing has lodged a formal protest with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) following the fatal shooting of a Chinese mine worker in Takhar Province earlier this week.
China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning confirmed on Thursday that “solemn representations” had been made to the Afghan authorities. “The Chinese side urgently lodged solemn representations with the Afghan side, demanding that (they) thoroughly investigate and punish the perpetrators,” Mao said, according to AFP.
She added, “China is deeply shocked by the attack, strongly condemns it, and expresses condolences to the victims.”
Takhar police reported on Wednesday that the Chinese national was killed by unidentified gunmen on Tuesday night while traveling in the province without notifying local security forces. Provincial police spokesman Mohammad Akbar Haqqani stated that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The Islamic State group (Daesh) has claimed responsibility for the attack, raising further concerns over the security of foreign nationals working in Afghanistan.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges to stability in Afghanistan, where foreign workers have frequently become targets of militant violence.
