AT-KABUL: The 215th Maiwand Corps of the Afghan military has taken delivery of its three Black Hawk helicopters as part of a planned to boost up capabilities of the security forces.
It has been reported that US plans to supply a total of 159 Black Hawks to Afghanistan in the coming years as it boosts the capacity of the Afghan Air Forces (AAF), considered one of the best-performing parts of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.
Officials in southern Helmand province said it is the first time having helicopters directly to be on air by Afghan forces to chase militants. Previously, the only foreign choppers were helping ground forces during operations.
On Thursday the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission transferred helicopters to the 215th Maiwand Corps.
Helicopters handed over based on recommendations of the provincial governor, Helmand governor spokesman, Omar Zwak said.
However, there is expectation of receiving more helicopters in the future, the spokesman added, saying Maiwand Corps had no helicopters before Black Hawk.
Strengthening AFF is a central part of the NUG’s for year plan to improve Afghan security forces, thus, taking every step for its improvement to properly contain the Taliban insurgency.
