Bloody months ahead: Ghani to legislators

By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: The night before Kabul’s suicide attack, President Ashraf Ghani met some members of the parliament to discuss security situation, the lawmakers said Wednesday.

“President Ghani marked the next six months bloody for Afghanistan as militants intensified attacks,” the lawmakers who met Ghani, told parliament session.

A suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden truck near an intelligence facility in Pul-e-Mahmoud Khan area in Kabul, in which 64 people mostly civilians were killed and 347others injured.

MPs said that president Ghani expressed his deep concern over security situation and asked them to offer security schemes to take practical measures against insurgents.

“Ghani said that we can play significant roles in supporting Afghan National Security Forces,” MP, Zahir Sadat said.

“Pakistan’s spy agency has launched a proxy war in Afghanistan,” said Sher Wali Wardak, another parliamentarian. “Peace talks are also a trick of Islamabad to keep our government busy to further fuel insurgency in the country,” Wardak said.

Afghans were hopeful to peace and security after the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) was signed with the US. But all the hopes were dashed to the ground as insecurity and evil designs of the insurgent groups are intensifying.

Mirdad Nijrabi, another lawmaker said that growing insecurity showed that Washington was not honest with the Afghans.

He stressed that the US silence against increasing of conflict has put the Afghan masses in an uncertain situation.

“The growing insurgency shows that there is no determination in the US administration for removing terrorists from Afghanistan. Therefore, the government should revise the BAS,” he mentioned.

Some legislators asked for the removal of the High Peace Council, as it had no gains in talks with the militant outfits.
