AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The government has kicked off an anti-land grabbing campaign in eastern Nangarhar province on Sunday, local officials said.
The campaign is aimed to retake the state-owned lands which were grabbed by some influential people over the past several years.
The campaign officially started in Behsud district of the province where a number of illegal buildings constructed on government lands were demolished.
Local officials said the campaign aims to regain the grabbed land and would be continued until all the state lands were retaken.
It has been reported that hundreds of acres of land were seized by lawbreakers in Behsud district. The lawbreakers have established illegal townships.
Meanwhile, Nangarhar deputy governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal said that they are reclaiming the grabbed lands and if any lawbreaker challenges the government then he would be brought to the books.
“Lawbreakers are involved in land-grabbing despite us having made several calls to them to stop their actions on government and private land,” Behsud district governor Israrullah Qazi Zada said to Tolonews.
Meanwhile, the Nangarhar provincial council reacted to the campaign and believed that the campaign was a symbolic one and would fail to achieve the claimed target. The council said those who are involved in land grabbing had support from within the government.
Obaidullah Shinwari, a member of the provincial council, said that the government should take concrete steps to retake the usurped lands and those who are involved in land grabbing should be punished according to the laws of the country.
