Canada supports Afghan women in peace talks

AT News

KABUL: Canadian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dave Metcalfe has said the Afghan women should be given chance to contribute to the ongoing peace efforts.

The U.S. top peace envoy and the Taliban’s Doha-based top negotiator had signed a peace deal on 29th February. Based on the agreement the US will completely withdraw from Afghanistan within 14 months. Since then, the Afghan women who suffered a lot during Taliban regime had expressed their concerns and have doubts on Taliban’s mentality toward women that not changed so far.

The Afghan women are struggling for influence to dominate the Kabul delegation supposed to carry peace talk with Taliban in a bid to safeguard their achievements.

In a ceremony in Kabul, the Canadian ambassador said, “No country can disregard half of its population in any effort of national reconciliation. Beyond the negotiating table, women’s participation is fundamental for all dimensions of building a sustainable peace—women’s engagements in post-conflict resolutions have tangible positive impacts on stabilization and reconstruction of economies and social fabric.”

The voice of women is very much necessary to be heard in the peace process.

“Women’s voices are necessary not just in subjects of health or education, but at the forefront of core political issues such as representation and integration,” he said at a gathering titled “Creating Access for Inclusive Peace Process in Afghanistan (CPA).

Some Afghan women participants had also talked about the process, saying so far the role of women are not bee visible.

Nothing has so far discussed related to the rights of the Afghan women, said Haseena, one of the participant.

Other women, Maryam Parwani said that the Afghan women are not ready to sacrifice their hard-gains achieved in the past 19 years.
