KABUL: Leader of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov has announced his army’s readiness to employ forceful measures to suppress the revolt led by head of the Wagner mercenary group Yevgeny Prigozhin.
This is as Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Russian military contractor Wagner Group which spearheaded Russia’s war in Ukraine for a year, has gone rogue and claims to have gained control of the Rostov-on-Don region, including the city’s airport.
In a statement, Kadyrov described Prigozhin’s actions as a betrayal and urged Russian soldiers not to succumb to any provocations. He stated that Chechen forces were advancing towards areas of tension and would take action to protect Russian units and defend the country’s sovereignty.
Kadyrov, a staunch supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and commander of substantial military troops in Chechnya, was once considered Prigozhin’s ally as they both criticized certain aspects of the Russian military establishment.
However, in recent weeks, Chechen commanders aligned with Kadyrov have condemned Prigozhin for his repeated attacks on the defense ministry.
Simultaneously, President Putin referred to any unrest as a “grave threat” and warned of severe consequences. Yevgeny Prigozhin accused Russia of betrayal and falsehood, alleging that the Russian military command had killed 2,000 fighters. In response to the accusations, a statement from the Russian defense ministry stated that Wagner’s claims were inaccurate and accused the leader of the military group of inciting “armed rebellion and fueling civil war.”
