KABUL: At least three civilian and three Taliban fighters including an insurgent commander were killed in National Directorate Operatives’ raid in the Khogiani district of eastern Nangarhar province, officials said on Monday.
Local officials said that the operation was conducted by intelligence operatives known as 02 Unit on Sunday night in Raeskhil village.
Attaullah Khogiani, provincial spokesman said that the Taliban commander Ziarat Gul also known as Pahlawan was killed and a militants’ weapon cache was destroyed.
Insurgents used civilian houses as shelters from where they fired at security forces, he said.
He said that during operation five suspects were arrested on charge of links with the insurgents by the national directorate of security.
A resident of the area who wished to go unnamed said that two of the dead included elder men aged around 60 years and a third one was 12 years old boy.
A Taliban Spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid said three civilians were killed and five others were captured by Afghan forces during the operation.
Civilian casualties during Afghan forces operation have recently increased across the country. A number of civilians were killed or wounded in Hesarak district of Nangarhar and Badpakh district of Laghman in similar offensives few days back.
