KABUL: China is planning to build an $8.6 million military base on Afghanistan-Tajikistan border where only Tajik military personnel will be settled, Tajikistan’s officials have confirmed.
The base will be handed over to the Tajik paramilitary unit later and is planned to be built near Wakhan in Badakhshan province.
China has already been running a military base in Kulob of Tajikistan that was offered on October 27 by Tajikistan to be fully transferred to China. China has built that military base in 2016.
Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon has also sent a letter to the Chinese embassy asking China to build more border outposts on the border with Afghanistan in return for giving full control of their previous base.
Though China has been very friendly and maintained close relations with the Taliban since they took power, the country also seems to be afraid of pouring terrorists from Afghanistan.
