KABUL – In a powerful address at the UN Security Council, China has called for a surge in humanitarian aid and economic cooperation for Afghanistan, warning that the country’s deepening crises demand immediate global action. Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the UN, highlighted Afghanistan’s fragile stability and economic progress but underscored the urgent need to address its humanitarian emergency, terrorist threats, and women’s rights violations.
“Afghanistan cannot be abandoned,” Fu declared, urging the international community to engage with the Taliban-led government and reinstate travel exemptions for Afghan officials. He revealed shocking statistics: 23 million Afghans require humanitarian aid, and nearly 15 million face acute food insecurity, yet only 3.5% of this year’s funding has been secured.
Fu criticized traditional donors for slashing aid, which has crippled healthcare, education, and agriculture systems, pushing millions into deeper despair. “Humanitarian aid must not be used as a political bargaining chip,” he insisted, calling on historically responsible nations to step up their support.
He also pressed the Taliban to combat terrorism and urged global powers to reject double standards in counter-terrorism efforts. As China marks 70 years of diplomatic ties with Afghanistan, Fu pledged Beijing’s commitment to the country’s recovery, urging unity and action from the international community.
