KABUL – In a recent development, China has formally appealed to the United Nations Security Council to reevaluate sanctions imposed on the Taliban administration as the country is in a reconstruction phase and its economy needs some overhaul.
Geng Shuang, the deputy representative of China to the United Nations, highlighted that Afghanistan is at a crucial juncture of reconstruction and revitalization. He stressed the importance of the international community intensifying positive engagement with the Afghan authorities to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis and to foster economic recovery and improved livelihoods.
Shuang underscored the need for enhancing human rights in Afghanistan and its reintegration into the global community. Moreover, he acknowledged the persistent threat of terrorism in the region, urging the international community to support Afghanistan in its efforts against all forms of terrorist forces.
The Chinese representative emphasized that the Security Council should ensure that the sanctions framework contributes to enhancing peace and stability in Afghanistan. Simultaneously, he called for necessary adjustments to the sanctions to align with the current conditions on the ground.
According to Shuang, China proposes that the Security Council facilitates genuine interaction between the international community and Afghanistan by promptly adjusting the sanctions. This approach aims to prevent adverse effects on the Afghan people’s livelihoods and the overall development of the country.
Additionally, Shuang suggested that the Security Council considers the swift removal of sanctions exemptions on the travel of specific Islamic Emirate officials as a crucial initial step. China views such exemptions as essential tools for promoting dialogue and interaction, cautioning against their misuse for coercion or pressure.
This plea from China follows the recent extension of the United Nations Security Council committee overseeing sanctions against the Islamic Emirate for another year, a decision that has raised concerns about its justifiability.
