KABUL – In a move that could boost Afghanistan’s economy, China has officially waived customs tariffs on exports from the country, the Taliban-run embassy in Beijing announced. The decision places Afghanistan among 40 nations benefiting from China’s broader initiative to expand trade relations.
The news was revealed during a meeting between Liu Jinsong, Director-General of the Asian Affairs Department of China’s Foreign Ministry, and Bilal Karimi, Afghanistan’s Taliban-appointed ambassador. While this tariff exemption is a significant step forward, Afghan traders still face hurdles such as banking restrictions, inadequate cold storage at border crossings, and rising costs due to international sanctions.
The lingering impact of sanctions on Afghan banks, now under Taliban control, continues to hamper financial transactions, posing ongoing challenges for the country’s export sector despite the new opportunities with China.
