Civil society activists demand early distribution of electronic ID cards

AT-KABUL:  A number of civil society activists on Sunday called on the government to kick off distribution of electronic national ID cards as soon as possible.

Ghulam Muhammad Muhammadi, deputy head of Tajiks Solidarity Council, told a press conference that the parliament has already approved distribution of the electronic ID cards, so there is no other excuse to postpone the process.

“Distribution of the ID cards was going to start around three years ago; however, some elements inside the government on the behest of others are hindering the process,” he said.

He said that the international community will end funding the process, if the government failed to kick start distribution of the electronic ID cards.

Muhammadi said that some figures by creating obstacles before distribution of the cards are serving interests of the enemies of the people of Afghanistan.

Head of the council, Abdul Rahim Haidari, stressed that the electronic ID cards should be distributed through the Ministry of Interior. He said that some figures want an independent body to distribute the ID cards.

Tajiks Solidarity Council also issued a resolution, where they urged the government kick start distribution of the ID cards as soon as possible, otherwise the government and those hindering the process would be responsible for the consequences.

According to an official source, the fate of the ID cards’ distribution process was going to be decided in a plenary session of the Council of Ministers, but was later taken off the agenda.

This comes at a time that the Chairman of the Electoral Reforms Commission, Shah Sultan Akefi, said that distribution of the electronic ID cards was essential for holding free and fair elections.

Despite constantly trying to get view of concerned authorities over the issue, the paper didn’t succeed to reach them.
