KABUL – Intense clashes broke out early Friday morning between Taliban fighters and Pakistani border troops in the Dand-e-Patan district of Afghanistan’s Paktia province, according to local sources.
The hostilities, reportedly starting at 1 a.m. on Dec. 27, continued for several hours, with both sides engaging in heavy exchanges of fire. Witnesses claim that rockets fired by Pakistani forces hit civilian homes, but no detailed reports on casualties or damages have been released. The Taliban have yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
The confrontation comes shortly after Pakistani airstrikes targeted the Barmal district in neighboring Paktika province. The Taliban accused Pakistan of targeting Waziristani refugees in the strikes, which allegedly killed 46 people, including women and children.
This latest clash underscores the growing tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, which have seen repeated escalations in recent years. In May, a significant skirmish in Paktia’s Zazi Aryub district prompted community leaders from both sides to initiate peace talks in an effort to prevent further violence.
The ongoing hostilities reflect a fragile situation along the border, with unresolved disputes threatening to inflame the region further.
