Cold snap; DABS issues load-shedding schedule for Kabul city

By Akhtar M. Nikzad-KABUL: Due to early arrival of winter season, power supply will remain off from 5 pm to 9 pm and 5 am to 8 am in all parts of the capital city.

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, the national power supplying company, has developed the schedule for winter after increase in electricity consumption.

Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday the spokesman for DABS, Wahidudllah Tawhidi, said that due to inadequate power supply there would be power outage in Kabul city this winter. Currently, the city is observing 50 percent load-shedding.

He said that due to early arrival of winter season and insufficient electricity supply, DABS recently prepared the load-shedding schedule for Kabul and other major cities to supply electricity to all consumers equally.

Tawhidi added that the electricity supply would remain suspended from 5 pm to 9 pm and 5 am to 8 am in all parts of Kabul city. The spokesman asked people to save electricity by keeping unnecessary electronics off in order to provide power to every consumer.

He said that people during winter season use powerful electronics for heating and cooking. Electricity generation capacity of the hydropower dams is also reduced due to low water flow, he added.

“Public hospitals and industrial parks are exempted from load-shedding,” he maintained.

Around 450 megawatt electricity is supplied to Kabul city while the populated city needs at least 600 MW.  Entire Afghanistan needs 7,000 MW but it imports and generates 1,300 MW only.

Last year five power pylons were damaged due to heavy snowfall and avalanches in Salang area. Kabul city plunged into blackout for several days. Assuring public of full preparations to avoid such incident this year, DABS said that all power pylons that probably would damage due to snowfall and avalanches were strengthened with concrete shafts.

Chief of Kabul Electricity, Mohammad Nasim Ganji, said that due to rise in the US dollar value, Afs0.20 has been decreased in rate of per kilowatt electricity.
