AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Council of Ministers (CoM) on Monday approved a phased issuance plan of Electronic National Identity Card (e-NIC).
The issuance process is now scheduled to launch on August 19 in Kabul.
The e-NIC Department in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) has announced that they have made all necessary arrangements to initiate the distribution process as soon as possible.
“We strongly support the decision of the Council of Ministers for the approval of our plan to launch e-NIC issuance. We are ready to start the process,” said Humayoun Muhtat, head of e-NIC Department.
Based on the CoM decision, the first phase will see 369,000 Kabul residents being issued e-NICs within three months.
“The Council of Ministers has approved a plan today for the roll out of e-NICs that will be launched in Kabul in the first phase. This will be extended to other provinces later,” Mujiburrahman Rahimi, the Chief Executive spokesman, as quoted by TOLOnews.
E-NICs are expected to be distributed within the framework of the law of the country and ethnicity will not be included on the cards.
Rahimi said in the line with the CoM decision about e-NIC issuance, the decisions that are made by the parliament will be implemented in the Census Law and the description of the holder will be registered.
The remarks come after the USAID cut aid to the e-NIC department over persistent delays in launching the plan.
The European Union (EU) recently warned that it would stop assistance if the distribution process was not kicked off as swiftly as possible.
