AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least 80 schools have been shut down due to recent conflict in central Uruzgan province, leaving student in uncertainty situation as thousands of them are deprived of going to schools, official said.
Mohammad Nazir Kharoti, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the year-long conflict in Uruzgan rendered dozens of schools shut and people’s cooperation was needed to reopen them.
He said efforts were underway in cooperation with local elders to reopen the 80 schools located in Tirinkot and districts.
A student of Malalai school, said traditions also played a key role behind the closure of schools besides conflict in Uruzgan.
She said girls were harassed on their way to school and as a consequence, many girls opted to stay at home.
About 600 schools have been closed nationwide for various reasons including insecurity amid efforts by the authorities to reopen them as soon as possible.
The closure comes as the Pen Path Civil Society (PPCS) is making efforts to reopen closed schools across the country. They pledged to enlighten mountains, and deserts of Afghanistan via education. Recently The PPCS have reopened 20 closed schools with the close collaboration of tribal elders in the southern Kandahar province.
“There were a number of male and female schools in various districts of southern Kandahar province, which were closed due to various reason, but the PPCS reopened it through tribal elders mediation, an office bearer of the PPCC, Attaullah Wesa told Afghanistan Times.
Prior to this, the PPCC succeeded in reopening of more than 32 closed schools in all 34 provinces of the country. The PPCS is working for the promotion of education and striving to enroll each and every Afghan child in schools across the country.
