Corrupt Urban Ministry officials to face court soon: AGO

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Attorney General Office (AGO) on Tuesday said that cases of the six corrupt officials of Ministry of Urban and Development Affairs (MoUDA) were finalized and would be sent to the court soon.

The AGO’s spokesperson Abdul Basir Azizi said that investigation in the mega corruption case in which six MoUDA officials are involved has been finalized. The officials embezzled millions of Afghanis.

Speaking at a press conference here he said that the detained officials have been alleged of misusing their authority. They allotted plots in the capital city and different provinces while violating the regulations.

He said that during investigation, AGO decided to expand the probe and include 20 others officials who are likely involved in the case.

“Whoever is involved in the corruption case will be brought to the court of justice. There will be no concession for those who are misusing their authority and tried to get money under the table,” he said.

Providing details about the corruption case in which the urban ministry’s six officials are involved, the spokesman said the case is about illegal distribution of plots, residential apartments and misuse of authority.

Three of the six dismissed officials of the ministry were arrested three months ago while trying to flee the country.

According to a report those who tried to flee the country are: Mohammad Amin Qane, the former head of the apartments and rentals department; Ahmad Nawaz Bakhtyari, the former head of the housing enterprise department; and Mohammad Amin, the former head of the real estate and accommodations department.

Reportedly, bribes in distribution of apartments, allotment of apartments to senior government officials and powerful individuals and corruption in the housing contracts are major charges against the dismissed officials.

After the Kabul Bank scandal, the case of MoUDA officials’ involvement in corruption is the biggest case sent to the judiciary, after establishment of National Unity Government (NUG).
