Kabul: Cricket Australia has opted to cancel their men’s T20 series against Afghanistan due to concerns over the ‘deteriorating human rights situation for women and girls’ in the country under the current regime. The series, scheduled to take place in the UAE in August, has been called off by Australia for the third time since the Taliban regained power in 2021.
Ahead of a World Cup group game against Afghanistan in November, Cricket Australia emphasized the difference between playing bilateral series under their control and participating in ICC events subject to their regulations.
In a recent statement, Cricket Australia cited government advice indicating worsening conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan as the reason for postponing this summer’s series. The statement reiterated the organization’s stance, stating, ‘For this reason, we have maintained our previous position and will postpone the bilateral series against Afghanistan.’
Despite being an ICC full member nation, Afghanistan does not have a women’s team. However, restrictions on women and girls in the country extend beyond sports.
