AT-MAIDANSHAR: Taliban militants have overrun the Daimirdad district in the central province of Maidan Wardak, an official said, as heavy fighting continued in the district.
The district police chief has been killed in the clashes and four others wounded in a fighting that erupted last night.
Civil society activist Gul Mohammad told Zaman News that all police checkpoints across the district have been overrun and militants have besieged district headquarters, shut down telecom services.
Governor spokesman Abdul Rahman Mangal said hundreds of Taliban fighters from Logar, Ghazni and other areas had assembled to wage the deadly assault on Daimirdad district last night. Dozens of militants have been killed and wounded in the firefight over control of the district, which also left casualties among security forces, he said.
Mangal confirmed the death of the district police chief, saying reinforcements are on their way to the district center and the areas will be soon cleared of rebels.
