KABUL: Afghan journalists marked the first anniversary of their 10 colleagues killed in a suicide attack on April 30, 2018.
The journalists included a woman working for the Radio Free Europe /Radio Liberty, were killed after a suicide bomber posed as a journalist, blew himself up among them while they were covering another suicide bombing that targeted an intelligence agency office in Kabul.
“It was really a dark day and it is still remembered as a dark day, and I have put black color on my Facebook page. Our lost colleagues are unforgettable,” said Ajmal Torman, Pashto editor in the Radio Liberty.
A number of journalists marked on Tuesday the first death anniversary of their colleagues, calling for reporters’ security.
“We call on the war parties to take care of the journalists’ security and help them in sharing information,” said Mohammad Kamal Afghan, a journalist based in Kabul.
“In Afghanistan, both of the war parties call themselves as Muslims. So, killing of journalists is unjustifiable for Muslims,” another journalist, Olfat Hasrat said.
2018 was the bloodiest year for Afghan journalists, in which 20 journalists were killed, according to NAI, a media supporting agency.
“One year ago today (30 April), 10 Afghan journalists were killed while covering war in Afghanistan,” US Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zalamy Khalilzad said in a tweeted message.
He added; “They gave their lives to ensure history was captured and truth was told. We salute their sacrifice. We purse peace so vital democratic values and institutions like free press grow only stronger.”
