KABUL – A deadly explosion rocked a central hotel in eastern Khost province near the Pakistan border on Monday killing at least three people and leaving seven others injured, according to local law enforcement.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:00 am, prompting security forces to launch an immediate investigation into the cause of the blast. A police spokesperson released a statement, confirming that the deceased were civilians, while the injured were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical care.
Among the casualties were Waziristani refugees and Khost citizens. By late afternoon, uncertainty loomed over whether the explosion was a tragic accident or a deliberate act of Pakistan aggression.
Eyewitnesses reported damage to nearby shops in the vicinity of the explosion, prompting authorities to cordon off the affected area. This incident evokes memories of a suicide attack earlier this year in Kabul, near the Foreign Ministry, which resulted in six fatalities and numerous injuries. The attack took place near a bustling business center situated close to foreign embassies and government edifices within a heavily fortified enclave.
A similar blast in January outside the Foreign Ministry claimed the lives of five civilians and left several others wounded. The surge in militant activities along Pakistan’s western border regions has drawn attention, attributed to both the IS and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a known ally of the Afghan Taliban.
Tragically, over 1,000 Afghan civilians have lost their lives in bombings and other violent incidents since the departure of foreign forces from the country in 2021, as reported by the United Nations. The ongoing toll of these attacks underscores the critical importance of maintaining security and stability within the region.
