AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai announced his resignation on Wednesday, citing ‘differing points of view’ with the government.
In his resignation letter to the President, Karzai said he would rather be alongside people and quit than have to continue as deputy foreign minister, alluding to an existing rift with the government’s leadership.
He said these disagreements had limited his working space and deterred his work in keeping with national interests.
He also added that such differences would have negative impacts on continuation of his work to defend the basic rights of the Afghan people, emphasizing that he would rather remain on the side of his people in the face of the ongoing mayhem.
Mr. Karzai has not elaborated further in this regard with the office of the president yet to comment.
In August, the then National Security Advisor Mohammad Haneef Atmar had resigned. He also cited rifts with the government leadership over fundamental issues.
“I have reached the conclusion that it is necessary for me to resign as I have disagreed with the government’s policies and approaches in the spheres of national solidarity and unity, peace and insecurity, political management and elections, good governance, and regional and international relations and haven’t reached unanimity,” Atmar had stated.
