Kabul: Flash floods have devastated northern Afghanistan, claiming the lives of over 300 individuals and decimating more than 1,000 homes, according to the UN.
The torrential rains led to multiple floods across the region, with Baghlan province bearing the brunt of the deluge. The World Food Program is providing aid, including fortified biscuits, to survivors. In Takhar province, at least 20 people lost their lives to the floods. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid acknowledged the widespread impact, citing Badakhshan, Baghlan, Ghor, and Herat as the worst affected areas.
The Taliban government has mobilized resources for rescue and relief efforts, with the air force evacuating people and transporting the injured to military hospitals. Richard Bennett, UN special rapporteur, emphasizes the need for immediate aid and long-term planning to address Afghanistan’s vulnerability to the climate crisis.
Videos circulating on social media depict the heartbreaking scenes of families searching for loved ones and preparing for burials. This catastrophe follows previous flooding in April, which claimed 70 lives and caused extensive damage to homes, mosques, and schools.
