Discouraging illegal immigration; Ghani urges youth to stay, work for home country

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani on Monday asked youth to stay and work for development of Afghanistan.

Addressing a session in the Presidential Palace where scores of young people participated, the president said that young Afghans should join hands and rebuild the county instead of leaving for the industrial countries.

He said the young Afghans should come forward for defense of the country as the country is saved “at cost of the youth’s blood”. Ghani said that youth should prefer to stay in their country as the European Union countries are not welcoming Afghans.

Regarding the peace process, Ghani said that he would not strike a peace deal with the enemies if it was not restoring long-lasting peace. Peace should mean durable stability in the country, the president added.

Blaming the previous government for corruption, he said that 16,500 persons who grabbed public properties are trying to use different tactics to escape justice. Appreciating his National Unity Government (NUG), the president said that five billion Afghanis were saved in revising the contract of a ministry. He said the saving was part of the government’s anti-corruption efforts. Ghani furthered that previous contracts were not based on transparency.

It is worth mentioning that the president is chairing a procurement committee comprised of different ministries to revise the previous contracts of the governmental organizations including ministries.

The NUG is criticized widely in the country for its failure to nominate the defense minister in the past one year, improve law and order situation and strengthen the national economy. Analysts say that most of the problems were created by the NUG as the two leaders had differences and were more focused on their own gains.

A few days ago, the Meshrano Jirga or Senate criticized the government for its failure to improve law and order situation and rescue the abducted passengers who were beheaded recently by Daesh in Zabul province.

The government was not only castigated for its failure to secure release of the hostages but also for its failure to take action against those protesting students of the Nangarhar University who waved flags of the Taliban, Daesh and other terrorist organizations.

While condemning the beheading of passengers by Daesh, the senators said that both President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah had taken the issue lightly and did not take steps to release the passengers who were abducted from Ghazni province.

Asking the government to provide security to public, they said the NUG failed to protect the citizens. The president and the CEO are responsible for killing of the passengers because according to the Constitution it is responsibility of the government to provide security to the public, said Muhammad Raheem Hassan Yar, a senator from Ghazni.

Several serving and ex-officials asked the government to convene the traditional Loya Jirga as it failed to overcome the existing challenges.

Former governor of Kabul province asked the government last month to convene the traditional Loya Jirga to discuss the outstanding issues and explore ways to overcome the existing challenges.

Abdul Jabar Taqwa in an exclusive interview with Afghanistan Times said that only the traditional Loya Jirga can end the crisis in the country.

He said the NUG should pave the gourd for holding such Jirga as President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah had already signed the agreement in this aspect when were forming the government.

The ex-governor said that the Loya Jirga should elect a new leader for the country and lead the country towards development. Expressing concerns over the current political, economic and security situation, he said that there is need for a new leader if the NUG could not bring reforms.

“The prevailing political, economic, security and military situations are of serious nature. The NUG leaders shall bring reforms and take concrete steps to resolve the problems; a new leader shall be elected by the traditional Loya Jirga,” he proposed.

Large-scale migration of the young Afghans, killing of Afghan civilians and security forces are the indicators that the government is going in wrong direction.
