AT-KABUL: Requesting local and foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for support, the special representative on reforms and good governance to President Ashraf Ghani, said that due to low rainfalls and snow, the expected drought could create serious economic challenges for the Afghan government.
Ahmad Zia Masood in a meeting with NGOs said that 75 percent of the total population is associated with agriculture sector. He said the expected drought would hit the farmers hard and would create food insecurity in the country.
He said the government is devising a mechanism to provide food assistance to vulnerable citizens who are going to be affected by the predicted drought.
Masood said if the international community failed to help Afghanistan then the government would face serious challenges. “The government is working on plans and solutions to deal with the drought through a joint committee comprised of international organizations and Afghan authorities,” he said.
National Technical Manager of Famine Early Warning System Network, Mohammad Fahim Zaheer, said the amount of precipitation that falls across the country is less compared to the previous year.
He said that snowfall was unsatisfactory and many water reservoirs including key dams would run out of water and could not meet needs of farmers.
