Editorial: Education key to sustainability

Education is the only rational way toward gaining sustainability. Education is the single most important aspect that would lead the war-hit country toward a durable development. Education is about teaching and learning skills and knowledge. Education also means helping people to learn how to do things and encouraging them to think about what they learn. It is also important for educators to tech ways to find and use information. Through education, the knowledge of society, country, and of the world is passed on from generation to generation. In democracies, through education, children and adults are supposed to learn how to be active and effective citizens. In Afghanistan, a country that has been nascent in practicing democracy, despite other issues, providing safe ground for education remained one of challenges as insecurity has already marred Afghan children from going to schools. It is a fact that progress in the education sector has been edge a widely success stories from the beginning of 2001 when the Taliban’s regime collapsed. Taliban rule was the darkest period of Afghanistan in the course of history in every field, but particularly to education. In that time, women and girls were prevented from going to schools and workplaces. After overrun, the Taliban insurgents still making efforts to prevent Afghan education lovers from going to schools. Recently, Taliban insurgents warned the girls’ schools in Ghazni, saying girls do not have the right to go to school after completing the sixth grade. It is also reported that girl’s schools have been closed for two weeks due to warning, but the chairman of Ghazni education department said the problem has been solved and student attend their classes. It is a fact that Taliban are the most brutal terrorist group that ruined Afghanistan and still doing it. But the question is that there is some negligence from government part as well. Second Vice President Sarwar Danish speaking in a ceremony to celebrate World Literacy Day which falls on 8th September (Today), said Afghanistan cannot achieve peace and development goals without improving literacy rate. “Considering different social challenges, literacy is the foundation of peace and development and without it, we can neither achieve sustainable peace and security nor development and social welfare,” Danish said. There is no doubt that Afghanistan had made remarkable progress in the area of education following the collapse of Taliban regime. But, the government has to find grey areas that making huge obstacles ahead of education. The related officials, especially the higher education, have to pay more attention to provide suitable education facility. Coming with one example, administrative corruption, weak administration, lack of buildings for schools, professional teachers and equipments are factors crippling the education process in central Bamyan province. A report published by Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC)’s regional office, cited corruption and weak handling of affairs that prevent the education system from being reformed and developed despite huge amount of aid from international community. Children faced issues ranging from lacking class rooms to professional teachers, educational equipment and clean drinking water in Bamyan. The issues must be taken seriously by the government and resolve all sort of problems, because by education we can steer our country toward development.
