Editorial: Government should be aware of ‘winter talks’

The Taliban’s representatives have recently met with a delegation of the government in the Qatari capital Doha to talk on the so-called peace talks. Mullah Abdul Mannan, brother of the group’s founder and former chief, Mullah Omar and Shabuddin Delawar, a senior member of the group’s political office met the government’s officials early this month.

The talks were reported to have ended with no positive results and the Taliban representatives subsequently traveled to Islamabad to inform Pakistani officials of the negotiations.

This is not the first time that the government officials meet Taliban’s representatives at the eve of the winter season that the militants take a breath in the cold winter and prepare for the next summer time fight. The insurgents who cannot stay in the war fronts, go to their shelters in Pakistani soil and empower their fighters to be ready in the summer attacks.

This is actually a tactic of the militants to keep the government busy in a talk drama so that the security forces stop fighting. They (Taliban) try to kill the time and spend the winter with no concerns from the security forces’ attacks on their hideouts, and then, announce their summer operations in late April or early May.

The government optimistically welcomes any voice of the enemy, while it is expected to find out the ‘talks’ is just a plan of the insurgents to take a break.

Our country witnessed several deadly attacks launched by the insurgents that killed, injured and displaced thousands of people.

Taliban fighters overrun the Kunduz city for a couple of weeks, which was the second time the city fell to them in less than a year. They also threatened the people of Pul-e-Khumri city of Baghlan province as they captured the Dahan-e-Ghori district, close to the city.

Militants arrived in the gates of Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of Helmand. They threatened Farah city as well as the city of Trinkot, the provincial capital of Uruzgan. These attacks caused the martyrdom and injury of tens of security forces and also the innocent civilians.

People also suffered several bombings and suicide attacks in the cities including Kabul. Suicide attack against demonstrators in Dehmazang, attack on the national directorate of security office in Pul-e-Mahmoud Khan and targeting police cadets’ buses in Wardak province were the deadliest ones.

The government is advised not to hurry in the talks dramas. It should instead, intensify attacks on the strongholds of the insurgents in the winter as they face problems in rearming and empowering their fighters as the snowfall blocks they ways connecting them to Pakistan.
