AT-KABUL: At least eight militants and three soldiers were killed in two separate incidents in the western provinces of Herat and Farah, security officials said Tuesday.
“A number of the Taliban militants attacked an army checkpoint Monday night in the Bakwa district,” said an army official in Farah province, where the incident took place.
He said that three militants were killed and three others injured.
“Unfortunately, three army officers were martyred and two others were wounded,” he added, asking anonymity.
An armored vehicle belonged to the attackers was also destroyed during the six-hour gun battle, the official said.
According to another report, the Taliban fighters attacked a border police checkpoint Monday night in the Kalata Nazar area of Shindand district in Herat province, officials said.
Kalata Nazar is located on the border with Iran, from where Afghans illegally enter Iranian soil.
The border police spokesman Ehsan Olumi said that five militants were killed during the exchange of fire with the police.
“The border police also seized five guns and four motorbikes from the insurgents,” he said, adding that no casualties to police reported.
Nobody including the Taliban, who usually claim responsibility for such incidents, commented regarding the attacks.
