Kabul: Afghanistan’s Directorate of Electricity (Barshana) announced in a newsletter that imported electricity from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan has been stopped due to technical problems.
According to Breshna Company imported electricity to Afghanistan was cut off on Friday at 4:00 pm due to technical problem inside the country of Uzbekistan.
The Breshna Company said that 75 MW of imported electricity from Tajikistan has been connected to Kabul in order to urgently solve this problem.
According to the source, the thermal power plant of Tarakhelo has also been activated to produce 60 megawatts of electricity.
According to Breshna Company, in the first stage, electricity will be distributed to hospitals and important security offices, and in the second stage, to residential places.
It should be noted that a few days ago Breshna Company announced that the electricity imported from Tajikistan to Afghanistan was extended for another year.
Breshna added that the Uzbekistan officials assured them to resolve the technical problem and resume the export of electricity to Afghanistan.
Imported electricity from Uzbekistan is used in Kabul and eleven other provinces of Afghanistan.
The power cut in Uzbekistan is happening while the citizens of Kabul are experiencing extremely cold days.
75 percent of Afghanistan’s electricity are imported from Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Every year in winter and cold weather, the amount of electricity import from the mentioned countries usually decreases.
Afghanistan spends about 280 million dollars annually to buy electricity from neighboring countries.
