KABUL – The European Union has activated its emergency aid reserve, announcing €150 million in humanitarian aid to address the escalating crisis in Afghanistan. This funding aims to prevent famine and provide critical support in 2024, with a focus on the most vulnerable populations.
The EU’s aid package includes nearly €126 million for partners within Afghanistan, over €11 million for Afghan refugees in Pakistan, and almost €11 million for humanitarian organizations in Iran. The funds will also strengthen disaster preparedness efforts.
EU support in Afghanistan will prioritize food assistance, shelter, healthcare, and access to water and sanitation, with €14.5 million earmarked for educational initiatives targeting 8 million children and adolescents, including 1.4 million girls excluded from secondary education.
In Pakistan, €7 million will aid displaced Afghans and their host communities, focusing on legal assistance, healthcare, nutrition, and education. An additional €4 million will enhance disaster preparedness.
Iran will receive €10.25 million to support displaced Afghan populations and their host communities. All aid will be delivered through trusted humanitarian partners.
This announcement coincides with a meeting of international representatives in Brussels to discuss Afghanistan’s urgent food and health needs. The EU reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring aid reaches those most in need.
