KABUL – An explosion in Kunar province has killed at least three people and left six injured. The Taliban-appointed security command in Kunar reported that the explosion occurred in the “Trink” area of Chapa Dara district, in a villager’s house.
Three people have lost their lives, while six others are currently receiving medical treatment, said Fareed Ahmad Dehqan, the media officer of the security command in Kunar. All the deceased individuals were members of the same family, as revealed by the Taliban officials.
The exact nature and cause of the explosion remain unclear, prompting an ongoing investigation by authorities. It is worth noting that Afghanistan continues to face the repercussions of unexploded ordnance from past wars, leading to tragic incidents like this.
This incident adds to the grim statistics highlighted by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), which considers Afghanistan as one of the most mine and explosive-contaminated nations. OCHA reports that two-thirds of the country’s 401 districts are contaminated with explosive remnants.
This unfortunate event follows a similar incident on January 11 in Kabul, where two people were killed and 12 others injured in an explosion attributed to a grenade blast in PD 18. The investigation into that incident is underway, according to Taliban-appointed Kabul security department spokesperson Khalid Zadran.
Additionally, a separate explosion was reported in northern Mazar-e-Sharif, with authorities yet to disclose information regarding potential casualties.
As Afghanistan grapples with the persistent threat of explosive remnants, these incidents underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address and mitigate the ongoing risks to the civilian population.
