Security officials pledge to retake Kunduz within 12 hours
Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Rahmatullah Nabil on Wednesday apologized to lawmakers and the entire nation for failure to protect Kunduz city from falling to the Taliban.
The Wolesi Jirga summoned security officials, including Nabil, the Minister of Interior Noor-ul Haq Ulumi, Deputy National Security Advisor and chief of operations for the Ministry of Defense Afzal Aman. Based on demand of the security officials, the plenary session of Wolesi Jirga took place behind closed doors.
Nabil assured the lawmakers that they will spare no efforts to retake Kunduz city from the Taliban within next 12 hours. Nabil apologized to the lawmakers, people of Afghanistan and residents of Kunduz city for their failure to prevent from collapse of the city.
Bashir Ahmad Tayenj, a lawmaker from Faryab, told reporters that the spy chief urged Wolesi Jirga to assign a delegation to investigate reasons behind fall of the city to the Taliban.
“Nabil alleged that officials in the ministries of Defense and Interior as well as provincial officials overlooked NDS security alerts and intelligence reports regarding the Taliban’s plan of capturing the city,” he added.
Lawmakers from Kunduz province left the plenary session of the Wolesi Jirga in sign of protest. They accused security officials of negligence in their duties. They said that leaders of the National Unity Government are responsible for the tragedy in Kunduz.
Farima Aziz, an Mp from Kunduz, accused officials of handing over the city to the Taliban based on a deal. “Dwellers of Kunduz city are faced with many challenges. Shops and markets are closed and residents of the city don’t have access to basic facilities including food, water and electricity,” she said.
She urged the government to take immediate action and supply food and weapons to the 4000 soldiers in Kunduz airport.
Shukria Paikan, another lawmaker from the province, accused the Minister of Defense of handing over heavy weapons to the Taliban.
However, the acting Minister of Defense Masoom Stankzai rejected the claim and said no deal has been made with the Taliban.
The Civil Order Police Commander, Zemarai Paikan, told Afghanistan Times that 1000 civil order police troops are on their way to Kunduz to support security forces in Kunduz.
