KABUL: At least 136 women were killed in different parts of Afghanistan during the outgoing Persian Year (beginning on March 21, 2020).
The ministry of women’s affairs calls family violence as the main reason of these killings.
Roya Dadras, the ministry’s spokeswoman, said Monday that the toll had 50 per cent increase comparing to the past year when 90 women had been killed.
She said that the Corona virus-related lockdown that held men at homes, caused increase in family violence that even resulted to murders.
Most of these incidents happened in the provinces of Sar-e-Pol, Badghis, Nimroz, Logar, Ghor, Daiknodi, Bamyan, Herat, Jawzjan, Baghlan, Laghman, Faryab, Parwan, Takhar, Kapisa and Kunduz, according to the ministry of women’s affairs.
Ms. Dadras said that they had registered 7,000 cases of violence against women in the outgoing year, adding that 4,000 of them were referred to judiciary for prosecution.
According to her, 2,000 cases were resolved through consultations.
1,300 cases of beating up were recorded as the highest level of violence against women, followed by escaping from house.
Violence against women is one of great social challenges in Afghanistan. Old conservative traditions, poor governance, culture of impunity, powerful influential people, lack of female judges and illiteracy are considered the major reasons of violence against women.
